Prayer And Fasting @ Table View High School
Jan 24 all-day

Come to our prayer and worship evening on Wednesday at 6:30pm- 8:15pm. We’ll spend an extended time in worship and have some time of prayer and ministry. We’ll also be breaking our fast together at 6:30pm, so please bring food to share. The whole family is welcome.

If you have any health complications, or you’re pregnant/ breastfeeding, then consider fasting TV or Social Media instead of food.

Fasting is not so much about not eating food, as it is about feasting on God in his Word and in prayer. It also serves to remind us who our true source is.

The Bible teaches that “People shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). The reason we fast from time to time is that it provides a focused time of reminding ourselves that though food nourishes us physically, it is God and his Word that nourishes our souls.

One of the main purposes of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world, and that which can so easily consume our thought space, in order to focus our eyes on Christ and his amazing story of grace. So we’re calling you to be in prayer and Scriptures more than usual and to seek God’s face. Fasting is not so much about seeking God’s hand, as it is about seeking God’s face.

The Bible is clear that it is not our efforts and self-denial that please God. God knows our hearts and it’s our hearts’ attitude towards him that brings him pleasure.

So we don’t fast to try force God’s hand to do what we want: rather fasting is a period of time of drawing closer to God – not relying on other means to satisfy our desires but relying on him. It’s a time of closer dependence on who God is, not only on what God can give. The result of biblical fasting is not so much that we change God’s mind, but that God changes our hearts.

SOME RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Wake up early and set aside as much time as possible to seek God alone on this day.
  2. Try to read and pray in the morning, at lunchtime, and then together with us in the evening.
  3. Expect God to speak to you through reading the bible, prayer, and through your thoughts during the day.
  4. Write down whatever you feel challenged by, or what you feel God is saying to you.

THROUGHOUT THE DAY

We would like to encourage you to look at some of the prayers that are recorded in the Bible to guide and lead your time of prayer and fasting:

– Ephesians 1:15-23

– Ephesians 3:14-21

– Philemon 4-7

– 1 Timothy 2:1-7

– Philippians 1:9-11

– Philippians 4:6-7

– Ephesians 6:19-20

– 1 Peter 4:8-11

You will see that these prayers cover many spheres such as praying for government (the well-being of our city and nation), praying for the message of Jesus Christ to be effectively proclaimed (praying for people to come to faith in Christ and for us to be used to bring others into the family of God) and praying for the ongoing maturing of already Christ-followers.

Of course, this is just a guideline so feel free to also pray as you feel God leads you.

We trust this journey will create some space to hear God’s whispers for our future together as a church, as well as for you to hear God speak to you personally.

Make sure you record these prophetic whispers and share them with your leaders where appropriate.

EVENING

Come gather with us from 6:30pm – 8:15pm at Table View High School on Wednesday evening for breaking our fast, worship and ministry together. Come ready to encourage one another out of what God has spoken to you today. Please bring food to share.
